Alcohol
What is it? A central nervous system depressant.
Also called… Ethanol, ethyl alcohol, booze, liquor, liquid courage.
What does it look like? Wine, beer, seltzers and spirits (hard liquor).
How is it consumed? Orally – mouth.
When does the buzz start? From the very first sip.
How long does the buzz last? The effects can last throughout the time you’re drinking and continue afterwards while your body processes the alcohol (about one hour per drink for a healthy adult).
Someone might choose to drink alcohol to…
feel less inhibited (more carefree or less reserved)
feel euphoric (a sense of well-being, satisfaction, or lightness)
alter their perception of colours, shapes, movement and space
experience stronger emotions or emotional outbursts (e.g. I love you so much!!!!!!).
However, alcohol can also…
Lower your alertness. You may take more risks than you would while sober.
Affect your attention, concentration and judgement.
Cause confusion and disorientation.
Make you feel a loss of control, sometimes leading to violent or inappropriate behaviour
Cause headaches and/or vomiting.
Lead to memory loss (blackouts), hypothermia (a dangerous drop in body temperature), unconsciousness, loss of reflexes, severe breathing problems, coma or even death caused by respiratory arrest.
Chugging alcohol can cause your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to rise very quickly and may lead to severe alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Drinking regularly can also increase your tolerance, which means you’ll need more alcohol to feel the same effects). Misusing alcohol may also lead to substance use disorder.
If you drink alcohol…
Avoid mixing alcohol with other substances, energy drinks or medications.
Stay close to someone you trust, ideally someone who hasn’t been drinking.
Avoid activities that require clear judgment.
Take breaks between drinks. Use that time to drink water.
Try to eat before or while drinking to slow down how quickly alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream. This can also slow down intoxication.
Plan your drinking session ahead of time (transportation, food, where you’ll sleep, etc.).
