Cannabis

What is it? A central nervous system disruptor.

Also called… Marijuana, pot, Mary Jane, weed, hash, kush, zaza, loud, dank, green, grass, Devil’s lettuce.

What does it look like? Dried flower buds, dried green or brownish leaves, hashish, oils, or waxes. Cannabis can also be found in drinks and edible products.

How is it consumed? By inhalation (smoking or vaping) or orally (edibles, drinks, oils, etc.).

When does the buzz start? Within seconds when smoked; between 30 and 120 minutes when eaten or consumed in a drink.

How long does the buzz last? About 1 to 3 hours when smoked; 3 to 8 hours (or longer) when consumed in edibles or drinks.

Someone might choose to use cannabis to…

  • feel a sense of well-being, satisfaction, calmness, or relaxation

  • feel more talkative (like you suddenly have a lot to say), giggly, carefree (#fuckeverything), and more connected to the people around you

  • feel more confident

  • experience heightened senses (music sounds better, food tastes better, colours seem more vivid)

  • experience “magical thinking” (the feeling that you’ve unlocked a cheat code and can do things more easily than you actually can).

However, cannabis can also…

  • cause red eyes

  • give you dry mouth (aka cottonmouth)

  • lower your blood pressure, making you feel dizzy when you stand up

  • cause low blood sugar, which can increase your appetite (#munchies)

  • trigger anxiety or panic attacks

  • affect your judgment and decision-making

  • make you feel sleepy, disoriented or confused

  • cause depersonalization (feeling like you’re watching yourself from outside your body)

  • cause hallucinations, paranoia (#badtrip), or, in some cases, toxic psychosis

  • slow you down physically and mentally

  • reduce your short-term memory, attention, and concentration

  • weaken your reflexes, affect your coordination, and impair your ability to drive

Cannabis has addiction potential. Your short-term memory and learning abilities are affected after you use cannabis. Regular use can increase your tolerance (needing to use more to achieve the same effect). Regular use can also result in chronic coughing, chronic bronchitis, damage to the lungs and throat, and can affect your motivation, memory, energy level, and mood.

***Cannabis use is not recommended if you have heart problems, diabetes, anxiety, sleep disorders or if you are experiencing mental health challenges.

If you use cannabis…

  • Be aware that cannabis sold on the illegal market may contain other toxic substances.

  • Start with a small amount to assess the quality and potency and avoid unpleasant surprises. If you’re consuming edibles, remember that the effects can take up to 2 hours to kick in, so start low and wait until you start feeling the effects before taking more.

  • Avoid activities that require clear judgment or quick reflexes (like sports).

  • Avoid mixing cannabis with other substances. Mixing substances increases the risks and makes the effects even more unpredictable.
