Lean

What is it? A mixture of cough syrup containing codeine and a soft drink. Codeine is an opioid medication used to suppress coughing and relieve pain.

Also called… Lean, drank, purple drank, purp, syrup

What does it look like? A purple or violet liquid mix, depending on the syrup and soda used.

How is it used? Orally (by mouth)

When does the buzz start? 30 to 60 minutes after drinking, depending on the amount consumed and individual tolerance.

How long does the buzz last? From 3 to 6 hours, depending on the dose and tolerance.

Someone might choose to use lean to…

  • experience euphoria (a feeling of well-being, pleasure, or lightness)

  • feel relaxed due to its sedative effects

  • alter their perceptions, by reducing attention, reflexes, and coordination

However, lean can also...

  • cause drowsiness or extreme fatigue

  • cause digestive discomfort, which can lead to nausea and vomiting

  • cause confusion, difficulty concentrating and impair judgment

  • slow breathing and, in the event of an overdose, cause respiratory depression

  • cause dizziness or vertigo

  • affect coordination, reflexes and balance, increasing the risk of accidents

Using lean, like any opioid, can quickly lead to dependence. Regular use increases tolerance (needing larger amounts to achieve the same effects) and cravings (a strong need to consume).

Withdrawal is hard and brings with it many physical and psychological symptoms. It can cause mood disorders, anxiety, irritability and depression, as well as insomnia and physical symptoms, like sweating, chills, nausea, and vomiting.

If you use lean…

  • Avoid mixing it with other substances, especially alcohol, which increases the risk of respiratory depression.

  • Never consume alone, and stay with someone you trust.

  • Pay attention to your symptoms and those of the people around you. If you have difficulty breathing or feel excessive drowsiness, ask for help or call emergency services.
