Someone might choose to use poppers to…

  • experience euphoria

  • feel warmth, relaxation and light-headedness

  • enhance sexual pleasure and facilitate certain sexual practices

However, poppers can also...

  • cause headaches, dizziness and nausea

  • rapidly lower blood pressure, leading to light-headedness or loss of consciousness

  • irritate the airway, skin, or eyes especially with repeated exposure or prolonged contact

  • increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, particularly for people with pre-existing heart conditions

The sale of poppers for human consumption is illegal in Canada. They may sometimes be sold as other products, such as leather cleaners or deodorizers, but they are not authorized for recreational use.

The liquid can cause chemical burns if it comes into contact with skin.

If you use poppers…

  • Avoid mixing them with other substances, especially stimulants like cocaine or methamphetamines, which can increase the risk of cardiac problems.

  • Avoid inhaling directly from the bottle for prolonged periods, as this may irritate the airways.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. The effects can cause dizziness or instability, so avoid using alone or in an unsafe location.

  • Space out use and avoid repeated inhalations over a short period of time. Frequent use can increase irritation and tolerance.
